When it comes to marketing, especially in competitive spaces like SEO and digital marketing, the temptation to use flashy gimmicks can be overwhelming. But as I learned from my conversation with Marisa Cali, CEO of Be Present Events, on the Unscripted SEO Podcast, authenticity consistently outperforms gimmicks in building lasting business relationships.
This insight is particularly relevant for SEO professionals who understand that sustainable SEO strategies require long-term thinking rather than quick tricks.

The Problem with Gimmicky Marketing
During our conversation, we dove deep into what authentic marketing looks like versus gimmicky approaches. Marisa shared perfect examples of when branding goes wrong:
On Over-the-Top Personal Branding:
“If they like cupcakes, they can still be Marissa Callie who likes to make cupcakes, but it doesn’t have to be the cupcake realtor. It could just be, your branding is you’re always at a cupcake shop or you host events at cupcake shops or every event that you have, you give a cupcake thing, but it doesn’t have to be branded in terms of like a trademark or a tagline.“
This reminds me of the relationship-based approach to SEO I’ve written about in “Google is the Other Woman: The Relationship Algorithm.” Just as Google rewards authentic, valuable content over keyword-stuffed pages, customers respond better to authentic personal brands.
The Platypus Problem:
I shared my perspective: “There’s this concept of like, my brand is my logo and my logo has a platypus. So I need a platypus costume and I need platypus business cards and a platypus shaped car and a platypus shaped business and all of these platypus logos everywhere. But that’s not branding.“
The same principle applies to SEO. When businesses focus too heavily on technical SEO metrics without considering user experience, they’re missing the point entirely.
What Authentic Marketing Looks Like in Practice
1. Simplicity Over Spectacle
Marisa emphasized how simple authenticity can be more powerful:
“It could be very simple as like color coordinated shirts or a shirt that sparks conversation.“
This aligns with effective SEO strategy. Rather than complex technical implementations, the most successful strategies often involve straightforward keyword research and creating genuinely helpful content.
2. Emotional Intelligence Over Flashy Tactics
“I think sales and marketing is very intertwined. And if you’re not listening to what people are saying, then what they’re going to hear is your verbal vomit.“
This concept directly applies to SEO content creation. When we focus on understanding user intent rather than just keyword density, we create content that actually serves our audience.
3. Value Over Swag
Instead of typical trade show giveaways, Marisa’s approach focuses on genuine value:
“We offer personal branding consultations. We go through their LinkedIn. Sometimes we go through their social media, depending on the industry… And we give them advice. That’s not something tangible and that is an experience for someone because they leave thinking they got something from it in terms of knowledge.“
This reminds me of our approach at SEO Arcade where we provide free keyword research tools instead of just trying to sell services immediately.
Authenticity in “Boring” Industries
One area where authenticity becomes especially important is in industries that aren’t inherently exciting. Marisa shared her experience:
“In a boring industry… I would say lean on the super fans that actually already use the product and find ways that you can create real videos. So this is not exciting for most people, but people that use the product are excited to share it because it’s an innovative thing for that industry.“
This approach works incredibly well for SEO services. Rather than trying to make SEO “sexy” with flashy promises, focusing on genuine results and enthusiasm from successful clients creates more compelling marketing.
For businesses in technical fields, this means showcasing real customer success stories, creating educational content that demonstrates expertise, and focusing on practical value rather than marketing flash.
The Anti-Gimmick Mindset in Digital Marketing
Throughout our conversation, both Marisa and I kept returning to starting simple and building naturally:
Marisa: “They’re starting out, okay, I have to have a brand. And it’s like, just start talking to people. It’ll come to you.“
This philosophy applies perfectly to SEO and content marketing. Too many businesses get paralyzed trying to create the “perfect” brand when they should just start creating valuable content and engaging with their audience.
The same principle applies to B2B SEO strategies. Rather than overthinking complex implementations, successful B2B SEO often comes down to understanding your audience’s problems and creating content that genuinely helps solve them.
Platform-Specific Authenticity
Another insight was about being selective and authentic across platforms rather than trying to be everywhere:
Marisa: “On my website, I’ll only do LinkedIn and Instagram. Or if I want people to connect with me on LinkedIn, I’ll just put LinkedIn. Even though I have all the other platforms, they’re just not built out in a way that represents who I would work with.“
This selective approach is crucial for SEO professionals. Rather than maintaining a weak presence across every platform, focus where your audience actually engages and where you can provide genuine value.
The Long-Term Benefits of Authentic Marketing
What makes authentic marketing so powerful is its compound effect over time. Just like SEO ROI builds over months and years, authentic branding creates lasting relationships.
Marisa emphasized this: “Yeah, we’ll align if we align, but it ends up not working out if you force it too much.“
This patience and authenticity create several advantages:
- Higher quality leads – People who connect with your authentic brand are more likely to be good long-term clients
- Better referrals – Authentic relationships lead to genuine recommendations
- Reduced marketing costs – Word-of-mouth is more effective than paid advertising
- Sustainable growth – Authentic brands don’t need constant reinvention
Practical Steps to Implement Authentic Marketing
Based on our conversation and my experience in SEO:
1. Start Conversations, Not Campaigns
Focus on having genuine conversations with your audience rather than launching elaborate marketing campaigns.
2. Choose Quality Over Quantity
Like Marisa’s selective platform approach, focus your efforts where they’ll have the most authentic impact.
3. Lead with Value, Not Pitch
Following Marisa’s example of offering consultations instead of swag – create genuinely helpful free resources and demonstrate expertise through teaching.
The Connection to SEO Philosophy
The authenticity-over-gimmicks approach mirrors the evolution of SEO itself. Early SEO was full of tricks – keyword stuffing, link farms, and manipulative tactics. Modern SEO succeeds through authenticity – creating genuinely valuable content, building real relationships, and focusing on user experience.
As I’ve written about in my SEO forecasting content, successful SEO strategies are built on understanding real user needs and creating content that genuinely serves those needs.
Authenticity as a Competitive Advantage
In a world full of marketing noise and flashy gimmicks, authenticity becomes a significant competitive advantage. As Marisa demonstrated throughout our conversation, genuine approaches to branding and marketing create stronger, more sustainable business relationships.
For SEO professionals and digital marketers, this means building genuine expertise rather than just claiming it, creating content that truly helps your audience, building relationships based on mutual value, and being patient with results while focusing on long-term relationship building.
The businesses that thrive in the long term are those that build authentic relationships with their customers. In SEO, in event marketing, and in business generally, authenticity beats gimmicks every time.
