SEO ROI
The only SEO metric that matters is the one your business can feel. Rankings and traffic are proxies — revenue, leads, and phone calls are the point. Here’s how I think about forecasting, measuring, and reporting the real return on search.
Traffic is a proxy. Revenue is the point.
For nineteen years I’ve watched businesses celebrate ranking screenshots that never showed up in the bank account. Rankings and sessions are leading indicators — useful, but not the goal. The questions that matter are the ones an owner can feel: did we get more qualified leads, more booked calls, more revenue? If an SEO program can’t draw a line from the work to those outcomes, it’s optimizing the proxy instead of the point.
Forecast the return before you spend a dollar.
ROI starts before the campaign does. I model the opportunity up front — keyword demand, realistic click-through and conversion rates, and an honest time-to-rank — so you can see the projected revenue range and decide if the investment makes sense. That’s the difference between “SEO is a long-term play, trust me” and a defensible forecast you can hold me to. The tools below are the same ones I use to build those numbers.
Report results, not vanity metrics.
Most SEO reports drown clients in data they don’t read. I lead every report with the metrics tied to your goal — leads, calls, revenue — and keep rankings and traffic as the supporting cast. The practitioners I interview on the Unscripted SEO Podcast say it better than I can:
“It’s not about clicks, it’s about results. When it comes down to it, what people care about is how much money am I making?”
“Traffic is a proxy. It always has been. If the graphs look bad, ask: are you actually losing sales, or just losing traffic?”
“Conversions are the only metric I care about. A business owner can’t feel more traffic — they can feel more sales, more emails, more calls.”
“If you’re getting attention but it’s not leading to sales, you need to change your business. The problem is somewhere in the middle.”
